I was going to post this story for awhile now and never got around to it. Now seems like a good time. My wife works in TV/film production and has been telling me for months that there was a guy on some of the crews that she worked with who was in to synthesizers. It was always, "Jeff has some kind of synthesizer". I asked her several times to find out what synth he had, but she always said, "Oh I can't remember all of those names and numbers." So a few weeks back the subject came up and I asked her to e-mail him for some pictures. This is what he sent back... Holy God!

Is that photo from a place in NYC? I feel as thought I've seen that set-up before.

I bet that synth is monophonic. Possibly one note per keyboard?

I also can't help but wonder what's in the rocks glass in the lower right hand corner. Peaches? Earlobes? Chicken fetus?

Moreover, I can't help but notice that the synth is positioned in ergonomic distance from Jeff's Protools computer. This implies that this modular is his SOLE synthesizer, or primary synth. If this is Jeff's sole/primary synth, what praytell, sort of music is he recording?
Is it Wendy Carlos type classical?
Is it bleeps and bloops type experimental stuff?
Is it minimalist?
Is it multitracked dance pop like that odd Christian band The Joy Electric (who use only a Roland System 100)?
What in Sam-Hell is he recording?

It's a modular, so it's monophonic. Very few modulars are/were poly. As far as I know, the Korg PS-3000 series were the only poly modulars. It is a Moog, like Carlos's and, being modular, can pretty much do anything and create any kinds of sounds creative patching can create. I see two sequencers as well as two keyboards, so it's possible that it's set p to be played duophonically [duo-timbrally?]. Aside from Keith Emerson and Tangerine Dream, though, modulars rarely leave the studio, though.
